Chicago campus

On Friday, December 10, 1999, NU IT Telecommunications and Network Services will perform an upgrade to the Octel voice mail system located on the Chicago campus.

The upgrade will begin at 6:00 pm and is expected to last a duration of four hours During this time your mailbox will be inaccessible. It is extremely important that you clear out all important messages prior to the upgrade as they will be erased.

Due to the upgrade, you will need to reprogram your password and record your greeting when you first access your mailbox after the new system is in place. Each mailbox will have a temporary password consisting of your 5-digit mailbox number, and you will be prompted once you dial 3-5555 from your office phone or 312-503-5555 by calling in from off campus. If you have any questions, please contact NU IT Consulting Services at 312-503-5560.

Differences with the new system

Once the upgrade is complete you will notice the following differences immediately:
  • Recorded names, greetings and messages originally recorded on the old system, may sound slightly different due to the new sampling rate. If you are an Evanston customer (who has not had to re-record a greeting) you may wish to re-record your mailbox greeting.
  • At the beginning of every session on the new system you will hear a very short tone burst. This tone is called a "convergence tone" and is played by the new system before any greeting or prompt begins. The convergence tone is used by the server to determine the quality of the voice path being used by the call.
  • You will notice a different set of recorded system phrases/prompts. Octel updates their system phrases periodically to reflect additional functionality available with the new software releases. The new phrases are supposed to sound much softer, calmer and more mellow.
If you experience any difficulty with functionality of the new system, please feel free to contact 611 (NU IT Repair Service Center) for immediate assistance. If you have questions relating to features or establishing a new mailbox, please contact NU IT Consulting Services at 847-467-5560 or 312-503-5560.
